Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
Perhaps the biggest news this week is an increased interest in Pioneer cards thanks to the recent organized play announcement that Pro Tours are back and that they will feature the format. This had lead to a bunch of cards ticking up in price. Two of the biggest winners this week were Arclight Phoenix (planeswalker stamp) (up 60% to $15) and Temporal Trespass (up 40% to $27). Temporal Trespass is especially interesting. The delve extra turn spell doesn't see that much play in Pioneer, usually showing up as a one-of in Izzet Control and Izzet Phoenix decks, but its only printing was a mythic in Fate Reforged which is more than seven years ago at this point leaving the mythic with relatively little supply and making it easy for prices to increase.
Pioneer is also driving the interest and prices of a couple of recent planeswalkers: Chandra, Dressed to Kill (prerelease) jumped 42$ this week to $19 while The Wandering Emperor increased 21% to $32. While these planeswalkers do see a bit of play in Standard, especially The Wandering Emperor - they have had an even bigger impact on Pioneer with The Wandering Emperor becoming a four-of in UW Control, the most-played deck in the format. As we move through New Capenna preview season, keep Pioneer in mind. A card being good there might be even more important than the card being playable in Standard, at least as far as prices are concerned.
Finally, keep an eye on the Pioneer dual lands. Take for example, the fastlands from Kaladesh. The cycle is in a really interesting spot at the moment, being one of the most important dual land cycles in Pioneer, but not quite being expensive enough to be near the top of the potential reprint list for something like Double Masters 2 coming out this summer. This week saw both Spirebluff Canal (up 22% to $20) and Botanical Sanctum (up 36% to $8.50) increase, and they could continue to rise as players build Pioneer decks to play in qualifiers. While not by as much as the fastlands, shocklands and the Ikoria Triomes - two other very important Pioneer cycles - ticked up this week as well. Basically, the TLDR of Magic finance this week is to get your Pioneer cards now. With organized play back and, at least for the short term, focused on the format, decks seem poised to get more expensive in the coming weeks and months.
