Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week the biggest finance news is that prices of Double Masters 2022 cards are finally starting to drop. Imperial Seal leads the way, crashing 53% on the week - a drop of $144 - to $130, but many other staples are trending down as well. Dockside Extortionist fell 35% to under $50, Mana Drain 24% to under $30, Smothering Tithe 35% to $25. The list goes on and on. If you are planning to pick up singles from the set I'd continue to wait a bit longer. The set just officially released Friday, which means people are just now cracking their boxes and adding supply to the market. Often the price floor comes a month or two after the release of a set, and while it may come sooner for Double Masters 2022 if the supply is limited, waiting another couple of weeks is still likely wise.
Apart from Double Masters 2022, things were fairly quite this week. Scourge of Valkas jumped 53% to $2.65 thanks to increased interest in Dragon decks in Commander brought about by Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and its combo potential with Ancient Gold Dragon (showcase), although it's still just a couple of dollars, so it shouldn't be too painful to pick one up to finish your deck. Perhaps the biggest lesson here is the power of precon reprints before they get super expensive. Scourge of Valkas has never been more than $5 even though it was a core set mythic and a staple of one of Commanders most popular tribes in large part because Wizards has reprinted it aggressively in Iconic Masters and two different Commander precons. Without the precon reprints, it's a pretty safe best that Scourge of Valkas would be pushing $30 like Archangel of Thune, which sees a similar amount of play and was also originally a Core Set 2014 mythic.
The other big lesson this week involves Commander precon cards. In the past when we only got one set of Commander precons each year, these cards were mostly valueless (with the exception being things like True-Name Nemesis (timeshifted) which broke out in 60 card formats) because supply was incredibly high. The decks would sit on shelves for a year at MSRP. Today in a world where every set comes with Commander precons things are different. Commander precons sit on shelves for a few months before they are replaced by hotter, newer precons the next set release. This leads to less supply, which makes it easier for these cards to increase in value. Just this week we saw Molten Echoes and Shadowgrange Archfiend from the Innistrad: Crimson Vow precons more or less double in price, and we'll likely see this happen more in the future. Basically, don't think that just because a card comes in a precon it's destined to be bulk forever. While this may have been true a decade ago, things have changed with Wizards focused on printing as many Commander products as possible.
