Weekly Update (Apr 17): SCG Invitational and Instant Deck Techs
by
mtggoldfish // Apr 18, 2016
We've launched a new series called Instant Deck Techs here on MTGGoldfish. Each day we'll be posting a short, three minute deck tech featuring some of the coolest decks that come across the site. The most popular deck will be made into videos the following week based on your views, likes and comments in the videos. Here's this week's Instant Deck Techs:

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

The biggest financial news this week revolves around Shadows over Innistrad Standard. Pretty much all the biggest winners of the week are cards that performed well on camera over the last two SCG events. Archangel Avacyn is nearly $50, Pyromancer's Goggles shot up 52 percent to $10.48, Knight of the White Orchid jumped 103 percent to $5, while both Thalia's Lieutenant and Tireless Tracker increased around 50 percent to the $6 range. If you have copies of any of these cards (and aren't playing them), it's likely best to sell them now. While they could gain a little bit more with a strong Pro Tour performance, they are already at — or at least near — their peak with no place to go but down over the next couple months.
On the other hand, pretty much every other rare or mythic from Shadows over Innistrad is on the decline, with most losing between 10 and 20 percent this week. However, all of these cards will get another chance at Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad. This said, if Arlinn Kord, Relentless Dead, Olivia, Mobilized for War, and Ulvenwald Hydra don't have a big showing, I'd expect them to continue trending down for the foreseeable future.
In Modern, Imp's Mischief was bought out, increasing over 400 percent to $4.79 based on the theory it would be sweet to Misdirection an Ancestral Vision. While this feels a little bit Against the Odds to me (I'm not sure this is the answer to Ancestral Vision), the bigger question is "does Ancestral Vision really need answering?" If you look at the top performing decks from the SCG Invitational, the answer seems to be no; there's not a single copy to be found in the 7-1 or better lists or the Top 8. While we're on the topic, Sword of the Meek didn't fair much better, with only Gerry Thompson's U/W Thopter Gifts list playing the combo.
Finally, one quick Magic Online note. A ton of people have been playing Shadows over Innistrad prerelease leagues over the past couple days, which means the supply of foils from Shadows over Innistrad is extremely high. In fact, one bot owner told me that they can get foil rares and mythics easier than foil uncommons. For chase mythics, you can get foils for the same price as non-foils, and for chase rares like Declaration in Stone, foils are significantly cheaper. As such, if you are looking to build with the new cards on a budget, make sure to check for foils; they could save you a bunch of money now and pay off in the long-term once people start redeeming foil sets.
