Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It was another fairly slow week in the world of Magic finance. By the numbers, one of the biggest winners was Eater of the Dead from The Dark. While the Horror isn't technically on the Reserved List, considering that it's closing in on being 30 years old without ever being reprinted, it might as well be. At a glance it seems like the price of Eater of the Dead doubled this week from around $50 to nearly $100, although if you dig deeper into the numbers, things get a bit muddy. While it is true that buying a NM copy of Eater of the Dead will set you back at least $90, it doesn't seem like anyone is actually buying at that price, with the most recent copies sold all being in various states of played condition in the $30-$40 range. If you just want a copy of Eater of the Dead to play in Umbris, Fear Manifest (likely the catalyst for the recent buyouts) or to combo with Phenax, God of Deception for infinite mill, you can still find many played copies for $40 or less, but if you're looking for a pristine copy, it's going to cost you.
As far as Standard legal cards, Saryth, the Viper's Fang is creeping up, gaining 23% on the week to $2.90, nearly triple its price from a couple of months ago. At first I was pretty confused by this price movement. Saryth doesn't see any play in 60 card formats and it's one of the least popular commanders from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, but after checking EDHRec, it seems the Human Warlock has become fairly popular in the 99, showing up in 5% of decks overall (a level of play that, if it holds up, would put Saryth, the Viper's Fang near the bottom of the 100 most-played green cards). It is especially popular in various go-wide Human brews. The lesson here is that in a world where Commander is the driving force of paper card prices, don't forget about the 99. Even if a card isn't especially exciting as a commander, if enough players want it in their decks, the price will rise.
Finally, Urza's Saga (showcase) gained another 15% this week. After being below $30 as recently as November, it's now up to nearly $45. Currently the enchantment land shows up in a massive 25% of Modern decks (always as a four-of) while also being one of the most-played Modern Horizons 2 cards in Commander (showing up in 7% of decks, a number that should rise as people figure out just how good an extra copy of Sol Ring is). At this point, there are really only two things that could keep Urza's Saga (showcase) from continuing to increase in price: a reprinting or a Modern banning. While a reprinting is all but guaranteed eventually, it's possible we're waiting at least another year for Modern Horizons 3. Note that most of the heavily-played cards from the original Modern Horizons went unprinted until Modern Horizons 2, where they showed up with retro borders in collector boosters. It doesn't seem like the community is really pushing hard for any Modern bannings at the moment, so if you need a copy of Urza's Saga (showcase), you might as well pick it up now, or plan on waiting a while for something to change.
