Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Death Cloud Valki, God of Lies Underground Sea

This week, outside of the constant drip of Reserved List buyouts, most of the big finance news is attached to the release of Kaldheim. Death Cloud was on our biggest winners list last week, but this week it jumped another 200%, putting both the Darkteel and Modern Masters printing up at near $20 thanks to a lot of Commander players building around Tergrid, God of Fright where the X-spell is perhaps the best card in the entire deck. Meanwhile, the 10th Edition version of Elvish Champion was also bought out this week, spiking to nearly $20 thank to the printing of Lathril, Blade of the Elves, although if you're willing to play a white border version or even the original Invasion printing, you can still pick up copies for under $10.

Meanwhile on Magic Online Valki, God of Lies has continued its climb and now sits at over $80. "Cascade into Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor" has quickly become the dominant Kaldheim strategy for Modern, to the point where there is already a conversation as to whether Wizards should change the rules to disallow the synergies, similar to how they changed the rules for split cards to keep people from cheating Beck // Call into play with Brain in a Jar. I'd be careful investing in Valki, God of Lies. While it's too early to say for sure what the future holds, it at least seems possible that something will change to keep the cascade trick from working, which would move the card from Modern staple to extreme fringe in the blink of an eye.

Finally in Reserved List land, a single Revised copy of Underground Sea is now close to $1,300, up from $500 six months ago and under $100 a decade ago. To put into context just how much the recent spat of Reserved List buyouts is impacting card prices, consider this: on January 1st, a complete set of Revised cost about $4,800. Today it is nearly $8,800, representing a nearly 100% increase in just over a month. If there's good news it's that most Legacy and Vintage is played on Magic Online these days, where the same Underground Sea will only set you back $11. If you're playing Commander, you always have the option to proxy a copy to complete your deck.
