The biggest financial news this week is the announcement of Iconic Masters, which will be the second "Masters" set of 2017. While it's too early to guess at what's in the set, from a big picture perspective, this is another reminder that Wizards is ready, willing, and able to reprint just about anything (other than Reserved List cards). As a result, it's becoming harder and harder to hold cards for years and year in hopes they will appreciate in value. This, in turn, means that playing off of seasonal influences like rotation is becoming even more important in managing your collection.
As for more immediate news, the biggest price changes this week come from Standard, with new cards from Amonkhet adjusting before they even officially release based on hype, set reviews, and other articles. Hazoret the Fervent, for example, jumped 72% to nearly $8, while Glorybringer increased 81% to almost $5, and Drake Haven 41% to just under $3. The exact reason for these changes isn't clear; while some of these cards have been ranked highly in various set reviews and articles, this isn't true of all the cards that increased. Generally speaking, I tend not to put too much weight in price changes during presales. For every card that pans out, there are two or three that end up falling flat.
Finally, Amonkhet continues to make its presence known in the Modern market as well, with Quillspike (another potential combo piece for the Vizier of Remedies / Devoted Druid deck) increasing 149% to $3.49. Whether or not this combo actually makes waves in Modern remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be surprising if Quillspike's price stuck since it is a popular casual card, and building -1/-1 counter-themed decks for the kitchen table or for Commander is getting much easier with the additional support from Amonkhet.
