Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis Scapeshift Mana Breach

This week, the biggest finance news came from Mythic Championship IV. The Modern tournament was historically dominated by Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis, which was especially jarring considering Hogaak was just targeted with the banning of Bridge from Below a couple of weeks ago. As a result Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis increased 73% to around $9 on the week as the new level zero of Modern. The problem is that Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis was so good and heavily played at Mythic Championship IV (making up 21.4% of the day one metagame and 55% of the decks that managed eight or nine wins in constructed at the end of the weekend) that the odds of another banning in the near future are high. If for some reason the Avatar remains legal it could shoot up towards $20 again, but unless you plan on playing the Hogaak deck in the next month (before the next scheduled banned and restricted announcement the end of August) the safer plan is to sell or trade your copies now into the hype. The same is likely true of Vengevine, which has double for $16 to over $20 in the last couple of months and has little demand outside of the Hogaak shell. Basically, move you're expensive Hogaak cards now, because it's really hard to see a world where the deck doesn't get banned at the next opportunity.

Meanwhile in Standard, Scapeshift is all the rage. Field of the Dead — the Core Set 2020 land which powers the Scapeshift archetype in Standard — doubled up to $3.19 on the week, while Scapeshift itself has been slowly and consistently climbing in price since April, when it was just $7.50 (it's now almost $20). While holding Scapeshift long term makes some sense, considering it is a Modern staple, the lifespan of Scapeshift in Standard is short, as the card (and likely the deck as well) will rotate in a couple of months when Throne of Eldraine releases. If you think you might want to play Modern Scapeshift at some point in the future, you might as well hold onto your copies, otherwise the newfound prevalence of Scapeshift in Standard offers an attractive window to dump your copies (at near full price, since buylists are currently offering as much as $18.50) before rotation reduces demand.

Finally, in the world of casual play, Mana Breach was bought out this week. Both versions of the uncommon enchantment increased more than 1000% on the week to $7 (for the 7th Edition printing) and $13 (for the original Exodus printing). The reason for the spike seems to be Omnath, Locus of the Roil Commander decks, where Mana Breach punishes opponents while also taking advantage of the absurd number of lands Risen Reef can put on the battlefield and the fact that Omnath, Locus of the Roil actively wants lands coming into play to trigger its card draw ability. If you need a copy, wait a few weeks, and if you have copies, try to sell or trade them in to the spike.
