Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Scute Swarm Flagstones of Trokair Recross the Paths

This week in the world of finance the biggest winner come from Zendikar Rising with Scute Swarm moving from under $2 to close to $12. While the self-replicating landfall Insect looks like a meme, early Zendikar Rising testing suggest it could be a competitive card, offering landfall ramp decks a way to stabilize the board in the early game by making a bunch of chump blockers and then in the late game it can take over the game all by itself. While there's little chance that Scute Swarm can stick at $12 - almost no Standard rares can maintain such a price once the set increases and the set is opened - it is possible that it remains one of the most expensive rares from the set.

Meanwhile in Modern Flagstones of Trokair is on the rise with both the Ultimate Masters and Time Spiral printings shooting up from just over $5 to near $20 in the past couple of days. The land has proven itself to be a key part of the new Selesnya Valakut deck (which you can see in action on today's Much Abrew) which uses the land in conjuction with Elvish Reclaimer to turn the Elf into a ramp spell along with being a land tutor. While sticking at its $20 post-buyout price is unlikely, Flagstones of Trokair was likely legitimatly underprices at $5 based on its unique ability and increasing Modern play. Settling in the $10-$15 range wouldn't be a surprise.

Along the same lines the Morningtide uncommon Recross the Paths jumped from bulk to near $5 thanks to the new Zendikar Rising double faced model cards and their ability to power up Goblin Charbelcher. If your deck has zero lands (which new Belcher decks manage to pull off by playing all double face model cards) Recross the Paths becomes a weird super tutor that allows you to stack your entire deck whoever you like. This makes it a Goblin Charbelcher tutor that also can find whatever rituals or support cards are needed to get the seven mana necessary to win with Goblin Charbelcher. If Modern Belcher is real the price could continue to rise, just keep in mind that Recross the Paths is very reprintable in a supplimental product, and if it stays expensive it should move towards the top of Wizards potential reprint list.
