Single Scoop: Tricky Tricky (Standard, Magic Arena)

With Kaldheim hitting the meta over the weekend, there's been a ton of talk surrounding Tibalt's Trickery and how it's pretty powerful in the Bo1 meta. That's what drove me to trying the deck out for myself. There are tons of variants around and here's a version I'm playing!

The deck is looking to play a free spell and then countering it with Tibalt's Trickery

The version I'm playing has more free spells to really give us the turn two we're looking for. Of course, with more free spells, we run a chance of hitting it off of Tibalt's Trickery so the deck is a bit luck based in that we're hoping to dodge a cheap spell or another Tibalt's Trickery as that will cause us to fizzle. The deck's weaker hits are Garruk, Cursed Huntsman or an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. The ideal hits are going to be our ultimatums.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Decks can often deal with a single big threat as none of the big threats in standard end the game on the spot. However, an Ultimatum would definitely help us put a ton of big threats onto the board thus overwhelming the opponents. The deck itself struggles severely if it has to actually cast the spells in hand as the deck intentionally plays 20 lands. Although our hands will look clunky, don't worry about it and try to mulligan aggressively. The deck can mulligan to three and still win so just focus on having the combo in your opener.

Conclusion

The deck feels too inconsistent but it is a ton of fun to play if you're looking for a polymorph style combo. When you think about how the ladder works, this deck is probably the best and fastest way to climb the ladder as most games didn't last longer than 5 minutes. Opponents will either scoop or you get blown out by losing your lone threat. I do think all the buzz around Tibalt's Trickery might be a bit premature but I can understand why people want this card gone. For right now, let's see how the Bo1 meta can adapt. Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one!
