Fish Five-0: Bye Bye Bolas (Standard, Magic Arena)


Rotation is approaching fast so I had to do a proper send off to our Dragon-God, Nicol Bolas! I've had many fond memories with Nicol Bolas and it saddens me deeply to see him rotate but rather than being sad about it, I decided we'd go for one last ride with all of our favorite cards!

Gameplan

The gameplan is quite simple, overrun our opponents with planeswalkers. Speaking of those planeswalkers, all of these cards will be rotating

So much fun has been had over the last few years with this card. Yes, even as Simic has casted a huge shadow over these cards, I will say these planeswalkers have all been amazing for the game and enjoyable to me. The idea of passives on planeswalkers was new and refreshing for the world of walker designs. I will admit that some of the WAR walkers were much less enjoyable to play against but the majority were sweet. Kaya, Orzhov Usurper may not be a WAR walker but her abilities have helped me deal with a fair share of Witch's Oven. Of course, we can't forget the cheesy wins with The Elderspell and Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God.

Of course there are other spells outside of the walkers. The good ol meme of Thought Erasure on turn two always was a blast. It wasn't Thoughtseize but I really grew to love the discard spell as it was a powerful card that wasn't an absolutely awful topdeck as we had the ability to Surveil. Oath of Kaya was a card I was hyped on when spoiled as it was a Lightning Helix that also dealt more damage whenever a planeswalker was attacked and has helped me stabilize numerous games while also picking off tons of Uncommon WAR planeswalkers.

Lastly, Interplanar Beacon will be missed as I got used to calling this card Interplanar Bacon for how many times it has saved our bacon, as this card made it so I could play the greediest of decks and survive to the late game. 

Conclusion

As rotation is always a bittersweet feeling, I will really miss all of these cards, but I can't tell you how happy I am to see Nissa, Who Shakes the World and Hydroid Krasis leaving. Yes, I love Bolas but I despised those cards more than I loved Bolas. Even then, the years have had some crazy fun bright spots. Thank you to Bolas and a ton of the WAR planeswalkers. Zendikar Rising's future looks fun and I welcome this rotation. See you all after rotation!
