Modern Mayhem: Esper Stoneblade(Modern, Magic Online)
Its official! Stoneforge Mystic is legal in Modern!
Gameplan
The deck still plays the control game plan but now we have Stoneforge Mystic which will give us a threat early that will take over the game if left unchecked.
With the inclusion of Stoneforge, we now have something in game one to make burn decks and aggro decks have a tougher time closing as we now have access to Batterskull. If the format is dominated by Stoneforge, I wouldn't be surprised to see those decks play something in the main deck to answer our favorite Kor Artificer and the equipment brought along. Just a reminder that in some matchups, you don't have to jam on turn two as we may need counter magic up. There's also the trick where you activate Stoneforge and then hold priority in response to the activation and bounce batterskull back to your hand to put it onto the battlefield with a fresh new germ!
For those that are wondering what is going on in the sideboard, yes that really is a Pulse of the Fields. I've just been jamming this as a singleton in the SB for fun to use against burn
Is this card a must? Probably not but it is quite cute against burn when their life total will usually be higher than yours. It also gives us more spells to play with as I find myself often bringing in Monastery Mentor out of the sideboard in most matchups.
This card is absurd and it's finally time to dust these off if you haven't already! Every spell we cast nets us a monk token with prowess? Don't mind if I do! This is the cheap threat I love post board that can close the game while not forcing us to spend all of our mana. With Stoneforge already in our maindeck along with Snapcaster Mage, removal that was once dead is now live and this makes me wonder if we should just move these to the main?
Conclusion
We got bodied by Tron. This was the first draft of the deck. I can already tell I'd like to change a ton of things. I definitely will be adding more Tron hate into our sideboard. Is the black splash good enough? I certainly think so. I'm normally not a fan of loading up a deck with discard spells and counterspells but maybe I'll try a more discard heavy variant with a few counterspells next time. Maybe Esper Midrange is something worth trying out as we'll be able to play Spell Queller which is amazing when combined with Teferi, Time Raveler.
Thanks for watching and I'll see ya at the next one!
