Modern Mayhem: Redrazi
Gameplan
It's been a while since Eldrazi has had the spotlight on them so let's change that this week with a list that was piloted to a 5-0 finish by christianybarr. Although we haven't gotten any new Eldrazi, we got an honorary Eldrazi in Ragavan and Fury.
Not much needs to be said about Ragavan but the fact that it gives Eldrazi a powerful one drop that ramps is huge. On top of that, Fury was a card I didn't think would get played as much as it is but being able to split up 4 damage is pretty big when you're worried about a field that has a bunch of X/1 and X/2 targets. Having these cards at our disposal can help us live long enough to win with ol faithful Reality Smasher and friends. Of course, Eldrazi can main deck Chalice of the Void as that card is probably one of the most important cards in Modern right now. Being able to dunk on free spells and one drops is huge. Sure, we shut off our own Ragavan but our threats will usually beat out whatever two drop threats are out there.
I won't lie, when I saw Eldrazi Obligator in the sideboard, I knew I wanted to play the deck. Maybe it's because I want to remind myself of the pain I felt playing Eldrazi Winter but it also has applications. Being able to steal a beefed up Hammer Time target can steal us a few games.
Conclusion
Are Eldrazi back on the menu? Well, they're obviously nowhere near the Eldrazi Winter days but it's a fine tier 2 deck. It still feels way too fair for the year 2021 but some decks just can't beat Thought-Knot Seer into Reality Smasher. If you're an Eldrazi lover, I think the Red version has to be the best right now. Being able to utilize cards like Ragavan, Fury, and Blood Moon is pretty major. I still question Engineered Explosives but it has its moments. I wonder what Eye of Ugin unbanning would do to modern.....
