Modern Mayhem: Cruel Story, Bro
Gameplan
So I thought I'd check out what's going on in Modern and then I happened to stumble upon a list piloted to a 5-0 by Nitreglyze and it paid tribute to our favorite god, Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God. I was immediately in love as the deck played cards like Lotus Field, Blood Sun, Narset, Parter of Veils, and of course Valki, God of Lies. It plays the control gameplan with some potential bursts in mana thanks to the Lotus Field and Blood Sun interaction.
This allows the deck to pay for some brutal mana costs like our dragon god, while also trying to cast spells like Archmage's Charm. The deck looked fun but it was missing one key piece. Modern is obviously dominated by seven mana sorceries, right?
Well, 2022 is a new year so maybe it's time for Cruel Ultimatum to come back. The card was a favorite of mine and I definitely forced this in Modern when Tasigur, the Golden Fang was popular. Well in 2022, we get to return Fury, Valki, and of the classic Snapcaster Mage. If we ever get to return Snapcaster, we can cast Ultimatum again and that is 100% game over in modern. I don't think I've ever lost a game after casting an ultimatum. I have definitely lost before casting one though!
Conclusion
This deck is just an overall blast of a time to play for Grixis and Cruel Control lovers with some sweet cards out of the SB like Madcap Experiment and Platinum Emperion. I do think the deck needs a little more to help you out with graveyard decks and pure control decks. Oh, I might have to face reality and come to grips with the fact that Cruel Ultimatum may not be good anymore but whatever.
