Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Swarmyard Reap Gishath, Sun's Avatar

This week, our biggest winners comes from the world of Commander, with Swarmyard jumping 53% to $22. While figuring out the exact reason for a Commander card spiking can be tricky, one good guess is the recent Rat-focused Secret Lair drop driving interest in the tribe. If this is the case, it would suggests that Secret Lair drops have a surprising amount of power in the Magic market, and that keeping an eye on future casually-focused themes and buying cards that could support those themes is probably a good idea from a financial perspective.

Meanwhile, Reap a random old Tempest rare that sees play in exactly 0% of Commander decks according to EDHRec went from near-bulk to almost $10 this week. The reason? It was featured in a Command Zone video where players talked about their favorite Commander cards. While Reap is potentially powerful at the right Commander table, it's potentially dead at others since it requires at least one opponent to be playing black to do anything. The Reap price spike reminds us of two things: first, the Commander community is one of the major drivers of card prices at the moment. Second, the Command Zone effect (cards that Command Zone features in their gameplay videos or podcast spike in price) is out in full force, making it important to keep up on the series.

Lastly this week, we got some early artwork from Ikoria, which seems to suggests a plane filled with Beasts and possibly Dinosaurs. While this is just speculation, it might be worth picking up Commander-focused members of these tribes, with legendary Dinosaurs like Gishath, Sun's Avatar and Zacama, Primal Calamity having especially high upside if Dinosaurs make a return (since one of the biggest things holding back the tribe in Commander is the lack of tribe members). With all of the Commander-focused price spikes we've seen recently, getting the cards you might need early is a great way to save a few dollars.
