Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance starts with Tarkir: Dragonstorm. The biggest gainer this week was Cori-Steel Cutter, which shot up 420% to nearly $14. Subjectively the card has looked very good when I've played against it on Arena. Objectively we've already seen the Bitterblossom like equipment show up in winning decklists from Standard all the way back to Legacy in various prowess and Delver shells. It seems like the artifact might be the breakout eternal card of the set and if this is true it wouldn't be a surprise to see it rise even more as we've seen with cards like Ledger Shredder (extended) in the past.
Meanwhile in Commander, Mirror Gallery gained more than 400% this week up to around $35 thanks to Deadpool, Trading Card (Deadpool). The wacky new legends wants you to copy it as many times as possible to give all of your opponent's creatures its not especially nice text box, but this is tricky since Deadpool is legendary. Enter Mirror Gallery, a card generally considered to be unplayable in Commander since you can only play a single copy of each card anyway. It is the perfect way to be able to clone Deadpool a bunch of times. Normally when a card spikes because of a single new commander, the gains are short lived, but Mirror Gallery is a 25 year old card with a unique effect with only a "The List" reprinting to its name. Its low supply could lead to it spiking even higher in the short term.
Speaking of Deadpool, Trading Card (Deadpool), it also caused the Streets of New Capenna Commander rare Determined Iteration to spike from $10 to over $40 as a way to repeatedly copy Deadpool itself. In the old days, Commander precon cards rarely held much value unless they became staples in Legacy or Vintage - supply was simply too high when we got only a handful of precons each year - but today is a world where we get something like 30 precons a year, the supply of any individual precon is lower (and demand for Commander-only cards way higher), which is how we end up with a precon card from only a few years ago shooting up to over $40. If you happen to have copies around, I'd look to sell into the hype.
