Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is mostly about Final Fantasy in Commander. Discounting cards from the set itself—which are still bouncing around during presales and should stabilize in a couple of weeks—the biggest gainer was Slaughter, with the Exodus uncommon gaining 222% to nearly $4. The card is getting some hype as an upgrade for Y'shtola, Night's Blessing, where its four-life buyback cost will draw you a card, and its mana value of four will drain your opponents for 2. While Slaughter might be good in Y'shtola, it's also worth mentioning that most of this price increase is driven by low supply: the card is nearly 30 years old and has never been reprinted. Once it is reprinted, it’s likely to drop back down toward bulk.
Meanwhile, the Fifth Dawn rare Artificer's Intuition tripled from $4 to $15, mostly due to an MTG Finance Reddit post claiming it will be good in Noctis, Prince of Lucis—which makes some amount of sense. Noctis, Prince of Lucis wants artifacts in the graveyard, and Artificer's Intuition is an efficient, repeatable way to get the job done. It's also another 20+ year-old card that has never been reprinted, making the supply relatively low compared to the current player base. The only problem is that no other Commander decks play the enchantment, which means all of the demand is coming from Noctis. I'm not sure how popular the card will be in that deck since, even though it’s efficient, it’s not especially splashy or fun. My advice would be to sell extra copies now while prices are inflated.
As for Final Fantasy itself, prices are starting to normalize. Cards like Cloud, Midgar Mercenary and Vivi Ornitier (extended)—which had prices in the hundreds or even thousands of dollars last week due to low supply during presales—are now down to a more reasonable $37 and $90, respectively. That said, prices are still incredibly inflated. Give it another month or so to snag the cards you need at the best possible price.
