Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is all about Final Fantasy. The biggest gainer was the Innistrad common Moonmist, which gained a massive 1400% to over $4 thanks to its ability to immediately transform the many double-faced Humans from the Final Fantasy set. While perhaps unlikely to be a real strategy in 60-card formats, it does seem like it could be a popular Commander strategy. Just keep in mind that if Moonmist ever gets reprinted, it's a lowly common and its price is likely to crash hard. But for now, if you want to try to flip your Final Fantasy legends, you'll have to pay a premium.
Speaking of Commander, the current most popular new legend from the set according to EDHRec is Vivi Ornitier, and thanks to the Vivi hype, Quicksilver Elemental is on the rise, gaining nearly 3000% this week to $15. The idea here is to use Quicksilver Elemental to copy Vivi Ornitier's mana-producing ability, which allows you to get around the once-per-turn restriction and make infinite mana. While the combo seems strong, price-wise Quicksilver Elemental is likely near its peak. It doesn't see play in any other Commander decks, and once the short-term hype for Final Fantasy fades, it's likely that Quicksilver Elemental will start to drop.
Speaking of Vivi Ornitier, the three-drop is also responsible for Blazing Shoal being bought out and jumping from around $2 to nearly $15 or $20 depending on the printing. While long banned in Modern, the arcane instant can make an absurd amount of mana with Vivi, assuming you can exile an expensive red card to boost Vivi's power. Much like Quicksilver Elemental, I expect this hype to be relatively short-lived. In general, when a hot new Commander drops, all the cards that synergize with it spike, but then after a few months, once everyone has moved on to the spicy new legends from Edge of Eternities or Spider-Man, people will forget about Vivi Ornitier and prices will fall. As such, there are two options: build Vivi now and pay more, or wait a few months in hopes of picking up the pieces you need at a discount.
