Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance starts with some strange news: prices of Final Fantasy cards actually increased, even though we're moving out of presales and the official set release happened on Friday. A week ago, you could get a complete set of Final Fantasy for under $600—now it's nearly $700. The reason for this spike is likely concern over supply. The set is already sold out in some places and massively overpriced in others, and rumors are flying that there won't be another print run until fall (although someone from Wizards said they expect a resupply in July, so who knows what to believe?).
The biggest gainer was Yuna, Hope of Spira, which jumped 265% to $26. The enchantment-based reanimator mythic was one of the best cards during the MTG Arena early access event, reanimating everything from Summon: Knights of Round (up 123% to $34) to Omniscience. Meanwhile, Lightning, Army of One doubled to $24 after showing up in some builds of Boros Energy in Modern, while Cloud, Midgar Mercenary reversed its slide and shot up 45% to $35 after Reid Duke gave it a 5-star rating and compared it to Stoneforge Mystic.
Meanwhile, in Commander, Quicksilver Elemental has completed its rise. The five-drop goes infinite with Vivi Ornitier by copying its ability. While this probably isn't good enough for Modern, it's an easy inclusion in a Vivi Commander deck. Before Final Fantasy spoiler season started, Quicksilver Elemental was literally $0.50. Today, a copy will set you back $30 after another 77% gain this week.
Finally, Mesmeric Orb (retro) gained 35% this week to over $29. While the artifact is good in basically any mill deck in Commander and even sees some fringe Modern play, it's especially strong with The Water Crystal, where each permanent your opponents untap will mill for a massive 5 cards—likely killing the table in just a couple of turn cycles in the mid-to-late game. The artifact has been around $30 in the past; I would be surprised to see it go much higher, especially considering the Brothers' War Retro Artifact reprint from a couple of years ago.
