Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance shows that Pauper has the power to move the Magic market. The biggest gainer was Merchant Scroll, with the 8th Edition printing jumping 348% to $35 while the cheaper Homelands printing roughly tripled up to $15. The reason for this huge spike is the unbanning of High Tide (Maddocks) in Pauper, which has lead to High Tide Combo shooting up to the top of the meta. Merchant Scroll is one of the most important cards in the deck, offering additional copies of High Tide (Maddocks) while also finding various finishers and protection spells. My guess is that the card slowly falls from here, but at this point it is clear that it's worth paying attention to future Pauper bans and unbans.
Meanwhile in Commander, the Fallout rare MacCready, Lamplight Mayor increase a massive 300% to nearly $12 as a popular upgrade to the Abzan toughness matters legends from Tarkir: Dragonstrorm like Felothar the Steadfast (borderless) and Betor, Kin to All. While it's too late to do much about MacCready in specific, the biggest takeaway here is that random Universes Beyond cards have the potential to triple up overnight, which makes picking up cheap cards from Fallout, Assassin's Creed, and friends appealing. Many of the rares in these sets are just a couple of dollars and might be worth picking up just to toss in a closet somewhere in case the right new legend comes along to send their prices snowballing.
Finally, looking ahead to next week, on Tuesday Wizards announces the results of their review of the Commander ban list, an undertaking that has lead to promises of unbans but no bans. Exactly what happens is anyone's guess, with possible outcomes ranging from a couple of random unbans to most of the current ban list being unbanned and moved to the game changer list. While the prices of some potential unbans have already increased over the past few months, if Wizards really does unban cards like Primeval Titan, expect massive prices increases this week. If you can guess correctly and pick up some cards that get unbanned before the announcement the rewards could be immense, although you are just as likely to guess wrong and be stuck with some mostly worthless cardboard. Either way, mark Tuesday on your calendar, because there should be some big news, both for Commander and for Magic finance.
