Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest news is that Wizards unbanned five cards in Commander, which sent the prices of these cards shooting to the moon. Gifts Ungiven jumped from bulk to around $16. Braids, Cabal Minion gained over 1000%, reaching between $4 and $7. Panoptic Mirror is currently over $50 after being under $15 at the beginning of the week. Meanwhile, Coalition Victory and Sway of the Stars—two cards that spiked weeks ago on speculation they would be unbanned—gained between 200% and 300%. Long term, I expect the prices of all of these cards to drop as the hype dies down, except perhaps for Gifts Ungiven, which looks like it could be a cEDH staple. But for now, if you want to play with Commander's hot new toys, expect to pay a massive premium.
Of course, not everything on the Commander ban list was freed, and this week's list of biggest gainers is littered with cards that people thought might get unbanned but remain illegal. Cards like Golos, Tireless Pilgrim (planeswalker stamp), Prophet of Kruphix, Biorhythm, Dockside Extortionist, Mana Crypt, and Sylvan Primordial all nearly doubled in price, but they should start to trend back down now, especially considering that Wizards announced they won't update the Commander ban list again this year. While it's possible some of these cards could be unbanned in the future, the earliest this could happen is 2026.
Meanwhile, in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, the big winner this week was Herd Heirloom. While the card-drawing mana rock has seen some fringe Standard play, it has been immediately adopted into a lot of Commander decks built around big creatures, which is driving its price. While being a rare might help its price from getting too high, I can't help but feel like Herd Heirloom is one of the sleepers from the set and could continue to grow long-term as it is adopted into more Commander decks.
