Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is still mostly about the impact of the impending release of Final Fantasy. Lost in the shuffle of the hype for new legends like Vivi Ornitier and Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER is the fact that Final Fantasy features several powerful new Knight legends. As a result, Kinsbaile Cavalier is on the rise, jumping around 200% to $16 as a way to give your entire team double strike in a Knights deck. While it works especially well with Dion, Bahamut's Dominant—the combo of flying and double strike is a great way to close out games—pretty much any white Knights deck will want to run Kinsbaile Cavalier.
Meanwhile in Modern, Mutagenic Growth has doubled in price over the past week or two thanks to Cori-Steel Cutter (borderless) making Prowess a real threat in the format. Thankfully, you can still snag the New Phyrexia printing for around $3, so it isn’t prohibitively expensive, but at this point it's probably worth digging through your bulk to pull out any copies you have sitting around.
Finally, checking in on Final Fantasy itself: prices of singles are down across the board this week. With prerelease events happening this weekend, we're finally moving out of the presale period and its inflated prices. The prices of the most chase cards in the set—like Vivi Ornitier, Cloud, Midgar Mercenary, and Jumbo Cactuar—have all dropped between 40% and 60% this week. Sadly, these drops have not yet been reflected in the price of sealed product, where collector boxes are still over $700 and play boosters hover around $185. This means opening boosters is even less profitable now than it was a week ago—and a week ago, it was already pretty rough. My advice would be to wait another week or two for supply to increase as players start cracking their prerelease kits and packs, and then snag the singles you need. Sealed product is simply too expensive to be worth opening at the moment.
