Modern Mayhem: Gruul Pwnza (Modern, Magic Online)
This week I'm going to try playing a deck that isn't blue or black.... WHAT!?
Gameplan
The deck is a midrange deck that has disruption in a different way. Where as black has hand disruption and blue has permission spells, in Gruul we have the ability to deprive our opponent's of their resources by messing with their mana base.
Messing with our opponent's mana base in the early turns is key so the deck really wants to mulligan into our accelerants like Arbor Elf, Birds of Paradise, and Utopia Sprawl. Once we've made our opponent's lose their footing in the early turns, this should buy us time to generate value with Tireless Tracker or hold long enough so that we can win with our big bombs like Glorybringer, Stormbreath Dragon, and Inferno Titan.
Our other methods of pressure?...
We have an absurdly powerful set of planeswalkers to try to grind out the games with. The biggest one to note is Karn, the Great Creator as he allows us to pull whatever artifacts we need from our sideboard to help us take down unfavorable matchups. Its also nice that Karn has a passive that can help us slow down the Urza, Lord High Artificer decks with a one sided Null Rod impression!
I'm also a huge fan of the Madcap Experiment into Platinum Emperion gameplan
Conclusion
**SPOILER ALERT**
***SPOILER ALERT***
The deck finished 2-3 unfortunately. Even without misclicks, some of the matchups just weren't even close. For example, that Polymorph deck dunked on us as we just weren't aggressive enough. The deck feels weird as the games we play with this deck will be polarizing. Some of our matches weren't close and we just ran away with the game or we got embarrassed and ran out of fuel. The archetype is a fun one that is definitely meant for preying on decks like Titan and Tron but will need some help stalling until we get to a Karn, the Great Creator to help beat Urza decks as we're just too fair to beat those decks. Moving forward, the only updates I would make are minor. It'd be adding more versatile removal like Abrade and another Courser of Kruphix to help us survive the aggressive decks
As always, I really do appreciate everyone supporting the content and reaching out on Twitter with sweet lists. Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one!
