Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance, the biggest news is that prices for some of the top cards from Final Fantasy are still climbing—so much so that prerelease weekend might've marked the low point for the set, price-wise. Vivi Ornitier jumped 21% to $66 after being the only card from Final Fantasy to make a major splash at the Pro Tour. But the real shock is in the surge foils—many of the most sought-after cards are now pushing $500 or more. If you happen to crack some boosters, be sure to check prices—your random foil could be worth way more than you think.
One of the set's unique gimmicks is the multiple versions of Secret Rendezvous, each featuring different Final Fantasy characters going on a date. Despite being a bulk uncommon in most contexts, these alt-art versions skyrocketed several hundred% this week and are now sitting around $20. It's a clear sign that, at least for Final Fantasy, character art and IP nostalgia matter far more than playability or power level.
Lastly, in more competitive news, Pro Tour Final Fantasy opened with a staggering 42% of the meta on Izzet Prowess—and if you include Red Aggro variants, over half the field was built around Monstrous Rage. It's hard to imagine Wizards looking at these results (combined with the past few months of Standard) and not making some changes during the upcoming yearly ban window on June 30th. Cori-Steel Cutter, Monstrous Rage, and Manifold Mouse are the top suspects, while Up the Beanstalk, Omniscience, and Abuelo's Awakening are also being mentioned as fringe candidates. If you're thinking about investing in a new Standard deck, it might be wise to wait and see what gets hit.
