Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Gideon of the Trials Plague of Vermin Castle Locthwain

This week, most of the important finance news come from Pioneer and the Players Tour events that have been taking place over the last two weekends. Gideon of the Trials was the biggest winner of the week, increasing 156% to $10. Along with showing up in the main deck of some white devotion decks featuring Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista, the planeswalker is hot sideboard tech to defeat the new menace of the format: Dimir Inverter. As long as you can keep a Gideon on the battlefield, the emblem of Gideon of the Trials is basically unbeatable for the Inverter deck. If you're looking for some copies, it's probably worth grabbing foils. So far they haven't increased much in price and you can pick up foil copies for $10-$12 in some places, making it essentially the same price as the non-foil printing.

Meanwhile, in the world of Commander, Plague of Vermin was bought out this week, going from $1 to $7. The exact reason for the buyout isn't clear. It could be tied to the recent Secret Lair drop featuring Rats driving interest in Rat-themed Commander decks. It could also be thanks to Ayara, First of Locthwain Commander decks, where Plague of Vermin offers an interesting finisher, potentially draining the table out of the game if you can keep your life total higher than your opponents. If you can get anywhere near the current price of $7, sell or trade your copies away. While it's unlikely Plague of Vermin drops all the way back to $1 anytime soon, it should settle in the $3-$4 range when all is said and done.

Finally, in Standard, some Castles are on the rise, with Castle Locthwain and Castle Ardenvale leading the way, increasing 20% and 47% respectively. The entire cycle is extremely playable, not just in Standard, but in Pioneer as well. If you don't have your copies already, they are probably worth picking up. As we move further and further away from the release of Throne of Eldraine, supply will start to dry up, and if they continue to see heavy Pioneer play (which they should), their prices could keep increasing.
