Modern Mayhem: Esper Charm Is Back On the Menu?

Gameplan

What year is it? 2021? Doesn't matter, Esper Charm is a sweet card and I'm playing my paper deck from a few years back.

The deck is your typical Azorius control deck splashing black for sweet spells like Fatal Push and Kaya's Guile. Fatal Push allows us to slow down the hyper-aggressive decks running around right now. Outside of a few pet cards, I do think cards like Kaya's Guile are genuinely good and worth the painful manabase. The ability to gain life back and exile an entire graveyard in the main deck is very important when there are burn decks running rampant. Along with burn, Modern will always have some sort of Graveyard synergy so it's nice to be able to stop that at instant speed.

Conclusion

The deck did better than last week's episode and can definitely use some tuning. We need more ways to dunk on Tron and 4C Control. I don't believe we have many ways to really dunk on 4C control other than to hope their internet cuts out mid-game so I'll look to trying to beat Tron. If Tron is the worst thing that can happen to us in Modern then that's good news-ish! It's still a miserable match up but the format as a whole is much better and feels exactly like Modern around Modern Horizons release. Do you have any tips or ideas on how to beat Tron while playing a control deck? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one.
