Modern Mayhem: Naya Midrange

Never would I thought I would type this but I've been yearning for a format where decks like Tron are viable. Yet, here we are. Because of my fear of Tron and big mana decks, I had to take a page out of the SaffronOlive special by playing a Blood Moon deck. Luckily, Adam Wallace piloted a Naya Midrange deck to a solid finish. I decided I would take their list into my first Modern League...

The deck starts off by playing cards like Utopia Sprawl or Arbor Elf to help us curve into our fun cards! It has cards like Pillage to help our opponents stumble a little until we can play our fair game of just beating opponents down with a card like Bloodbraid Elf or Elder Gargaroth. We also have some noncreature beatdown plans like Wrenn and Six, Chandra, Torch of Defiance, and Nahiri, the Harbinger

It's nice to have a backup plan in the event that dunking our opponents with a single creature go awry. It's also a nice marker for where the format is if I can win with a four mana planeswalker. If a format can afford to play cards like Chandra, Nahiri, or Jace then I'd say Modern is in a good spot. 

Conclusion

It felt good to get back into a modern league. Most importantly, the format actually felt fun and was a lot like where the format was during Modern Horizon's era (without Hogaak). The cards and decks we played against felt insanely fair compared to what I was used to from Modern last year. The deck itself however, felt it needed a few solid answers out of the board to beat some creature decks like Izzet Blitz. Other than that, the deck has the same issues it's always had, which is the ability to manipulate your deck with cards like Opt and etc. Wrenn and Six + Tranquil Thicket help with that a little bit but sometimes that's just a bit too slow. No worries though, I'm sure Green will get a Ponder or Preordain in a year or two so we'll check back in then!
