Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Grim Flayer Death's Shadow Saheeli Rai

Even though the focus is on Kaladesh, the biggest finance news of the week actually comes from Eldritch Moon, with Grim Flayer increasing 76% to nearly $20 on the back of wide adoption in Abzan in Modern at this weekend's World Championships. Assuming Abzan remains one of the most played decks in the format and the adoption of Grim Flayer is for real, we could be looking at the next Voice of Resurgence — the small set mythic two-drop that ends up $40 in a few years.

Also in Modern, Death's Shadow jumped 124% to about $25. While it might look like a buyout, there is real demand here. We are to the point where Worldwake cards are low-supply compared to the current player base, and the Death's Shadow Zoo deck has proven to be in the top tiers of the Modern format. If you dig around on eBay, you can still find copies in the $16 range, and if you're planning on play the deck, it might be a good idea to pick up your set. My guess would be that the emergence of Death's Shadow Zoo came too late for Modern Masters 2017, so it might be a long wait for another printing.

As for Kaladesh, preorder prices are lower than I would have expected for a lot of cards, probably because many of the mechanics are really had to analyze. Are vehicles going to be playable in Standard? How good is Saheeli Rai? Will there be a broken energy deck? While I wouldn't bet on any of these things, it's certainly possible that any or all of these cards increase in price over the next couple weeks as the rest of the set is spoiled. If your testing or gut suggests any of these cards or mechanics are better than they look at first glance, it might be wise to pick up your copies now, since many of the rares and mythics are close to bulk, even during this presale period.
