Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week was pretty tame in the world of Magic finance as players prepare for Innistrad: Crimson Vow spoilers to begin next Thursday. The biggest winner this week, in terms of% gained, was Brought Back (planeswalker stamp), which doubled to just under $3. The white instant is on the upswing in Modern where decks are using it to ramp, returning fetchlands to the battlefield, and to reanimate things like Fury and Solitude after evoking them, and chaining together Showdown of the Skalds for card advantage. It wouldn't be shocking for Brought Back (planeswalker stamp) to slowly continue to rise; it seems criminally underrated in Commander where it can be one of the best white ramp spells in the format, assuming you have fetchlands to return to the battlefield. While reprints are always a risk, Brought Back (planeswalker stamp) is unique enough and has enough potential that I don't mind holding onto some copies.
For the past couple of weeks we've been talking about how Vampires could spike once Innistrad: Crimson Vow spoilers start. Well add Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord to the list of Vampire cards that are off to an early start. The planeswalker has nearly doubled in price since August and is now almost $30. The big problem is that Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord doesn't really see much play in Commander. Even in the most popular Vampire Tribal Commander decks like Edgar Markov, Drana, Liberator of Malakir, and Olivia Voldaren, it shows up less than 50% of the time, which limits the planeswalker's potential. On the other hand, we've already seen Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord be good enough for Pioneer Vampires. If some new Innistrad: Crimson Vow bloodsuckers make the tribe playable in Modern, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord will almost certainly be a four-of in the deck and as a one-print mythic from a core set, the sky would be the limit price-wise.
Finally, keep an eye on the mythic MDFCs from Zendikar Rising. While the gains weren't huge, both Shatterskull Smashing and Emeria's Call ticked up a few% this week, and it seems like the cycle is at or near its floor price-wise. All of the mythic MDFCs - Agadeem's Awakening, Turntimber Symbiosis, Sea Gate Restoration, Shatterskull Smashing, and Emeria's Call - see heavy play in Commander, and most show up in formats like Legacy and Modern as well. Being double-faced reduces the chances that they'll be reprinted in various supplemental products, and now that we're a year past the release of Zendikar Rising, it wouldn't be a surprise if prices started to rise. While a fast spike is unlikely, they are the exact kind of cards that slowly tick up in price and could end up being surprisingly expensive in a couple of years.
