Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance the biggest gainer was Scrapheap, with the Urza's Legacy rare shooting up 257% to $10. Players love Edge of Eternities’ Lobster Man Ragost, Deft Gastronaut — the Boros legend is currently the most popular commander from the set, nearly doubling up second place Tannuk, Steadfast Second — and Scrapheap is a somewhat popular addition to the deck thanks to its ability to gain even more life whenever you sacrifice a Food. Really though, the biggest reason for this price jump is that Scrapheap is more than 25 years old and somehow has never been reprinted even though it’s not on the Reserved List, which means the current supply is pretty small compared to the size of the player base.
Meanwhile, in Standard Soulstone Sanctuary (extended) is on the rise, doubling up to over $6 this week. The creature land is showing up across archetypes in Standard, including both Izzet Cauldron and Dimir Midrange, the two most popular decks in the format. Here it’s also notable that Soulstone Sanctuary (extended) is from Foundations, which means it’s never supposed to rotate out of Standard, which also means it has the potential to remain a staple for years even once people stop opening Foundations. It will be interesting to see how cards from the set react in the long term since we’ve never had cards remain legal in Standard for so long before.
Finally, in stranger news Mages' Contest doubled up to $20 this week, and I can’t figure out why. While I did find one semi-popular short calling the card the “most fun” counterspell, which I guess could be the catalyst, that’s about it. Honestly, I’ve never seen anyone play the card, which is backed up by EDHRec showing that Mages' Contest is in 0.2% of Commander decks. Overall this one feels safe to ignore, but if you have some ideas about why it’s $20 now, make sure to let me know, because I’m super curious.
