Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Skyclave Apparition Omnath, Locus of Creation Walking Dead

This week in the world of finance the biggest winner was Skyclave Apparition which more than doubled in price to just over $7. While the Kor Spirit is still finding its footing in Standard, it's already a Modern staple; it's the fourth most-played creature in the entire format trailing only Lurrus of the Dream-Den, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and Monastery Swiftspear. The reason for the high demand is that the three-drop sees play across archetypes, showing up in Humans, Spirits, and Death & Taxes, along with other fringe decks. While being an in-print rare does limit its price ceiling, if it continues to see heavy play, it's not impossible that it doubles up in price again into the $15 range. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove is currently over $13 and sees significantly less Modern play. If you're planning on playing white decks in Modern, you might as well pick up your copies soon. It's hard to imagine Skyclave Apparition ever being bad in the format and the price could continue to climb.

The other big news this week was the Standard banning of Omnath, Locus of Creation (along with Lucky Clover and Escape to the Wilds, which are both much less relevant from a finance perspective). While Omnath did lose 14% of its value on the week, ticking down to $19 from about $22, I wouldn't be in a rush to sell the Elemental. Omnath, Locus of Creation is currently the most popular commander in the Commander format according to EDHRec, and recently cracked our list of the 10 most-played creatures in Modern. Much like its also-banned partner in crime Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath (which is still over $40), there is so much demand for Omnath, Locus of Creation from non-Standard formats that I wouldn't be surprised to see it start increasing in price again before long after the initial ban-based selloff ends.

Finally, we got a huge Walking Dead price spike this week. No, not the Secret Lair drop, the original Walking Dead from Legends! The common more than doubled up from under $2 to nearly $5, most likely from players wanting it to play in decks built around Secret Lair x The Walking Dead legends in Commander for flavor purposes. While $5 might seem like a lot for a common, the best estimate is that there were only 212,000 copies of Walking Dead printed, many of which have likely been lost over the past 30 years. Thankfully, discounting memes and flavor, it's not a card that anyone really needs to build a competitive deck. Drudge Skeletons is essentially the same card and you should be able to pick it up for literal pennies if you're in the market for a two-mana black regenerator.
