Historic 101: Haunting of Historic 2
One would say that October has me in high spirits so I'm pretty excited to try to force a tribe that is perfect for October! You guessed it, it's spirits! Spirits haven't gotten Spell Queller yet but we did get some sweet new cards from Zendikar Rising. One of those cards being Skyclave Apparition which gives us a solid form of removal. Here's the list I've currently got:
Gameplan
The deck is all about tempo plays and being able to play in a flash manner. We last tried the deck when Rattlechains was released and a lot has happened since then.
For starters, Collected Company has hit the Historic format and by now we've all seen the power of this card so automatically, it boosts the Spirit tribe up a solid tier in terms of power. Of course, the next thing that has me excited for spirits is Skyclave Apparition. The deck only had ways to tap things down through Shacklegeist and Nebelgast Herald. That was always a tricky line to walk but now we've got an exiling effect for a permanent that costs four mana or less. This card combined with CoCo or Rattlechains makes for some sweet instant speed plays!
Now, spirits don't have Selfless Spirit so I thought we'd try Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate out of the sideboard as an honorary spirit. Linvala is also a target that can be acquired off of a CoCo, which gives her a ton more value. I also love her versatility when it comes to being able to give our creatures Hexproof or Indestructible! Zendikar has also given us a new card to sideboard to help fight the Jund Sacrifice decks in Yasharn, Implacable Earth! Though Yasharn isn't a target we can grab off of CoCo, it's still powerful enough to warrant a sideboard slot!
Conclusion
The deck didn't finish too strong with a few pilot errors (surprise!) but the tribe does feel a bit weak still. It did go 3-2 so I can't complain but it honestly feels like it's a Spell Queller from being the real deal. For now, spirits is more of just a pet tribe for Historic until we get a few more pieces. Regardless of the deck's viability, it was fun to see a watered-down version of its pioneer counterpart. Zendikar Rising definitely gave the deck some new tools to CoCo.
Anywho, thanks for joining me as I continue down the path of Halloween themed decks! Hopefully some day we can get enough Werewolves on Arena. I guess that means I'll have to try that in Modern! Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one! Stay spooky!
