Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Field of the Dead Savor the Moment Arcane Signet

Despite Wizards moving up the next banned and restricted announcement (a move many players see as a sign that Field of the Dead will be banned in Standard), many of the biggest winners in Standard this week are key parts to the Golos, Tireless Pilgrim / Field of the Dead deck, with Agent of Treachery (up 65% to $2.28), Hydroid Krasis (up 18% to $29.23) and Golos, Tireless Pilgrim (up 16% to $5) leading the way. Personally I'd be very nervous about buying into a Field of the Dead deck right now. While a banning isn't guaranteed, it would be pretty surprising if Wizards moved up the banned and restricted announcement only for it to end with "no changes" and it seems exceedingly unlikely Wizards would bother moving the B&R update for a non-Standard format, especially right now, when we have two Standard Mythic Championships in the next month. The only good news for Field of the Dead players is that the most expensive cards in the deck (Hydroid Krasis, Teferi, Time Raveler, Once Upon a Time and shocklands/Fabled Passage) are Standard (or even cross-format) staples and are unlikely to lose a ton of value even if the Golos, Tireless Pilgrim / Field of the Dead deck gets banned. Still, October 21st (the next B&R date) is only a week away, so I'd hold off on buying/crafting Field of the Dead decks for the next few days, just to be safe.

Meanwhile, in Modern, the biggest winner of the week was Savor the Moment (up 172% to $20.47). The cheap extra turn spell is part of a new Turns deck that looks to use Fires of Invention to negate the drawback of not being able to untap by casting all of its spells for free with Fires of Invention. At this point, the deck only has a Magic Online 5-0 to its name as far as tournament results, so its long-term future is unclear. Over the next week or two Savor the Moment should drop a bit from its post-buyout high, but if the deck actually starts to post results in paper tournaments, it's far from impossible that Savor the Moment sticks around $20. It only has one relatively low supply printing in Shadowmoor which means it doesn't take that much demand for the price to creep up.

Finally, checking in with Throne of Eldraine as a whole, the set is down roughly 10% in the past week, a fairly large but not surprising drop for the week after a set release. This doesn't include cards found outside of normal boosters. The biggest losers this week were once again the Brawl deck exclusives, with many of the chase cards that were $30 a couple of weeks ago now in the $7 to $12 range. Still, even with this huge price drop, the Brawl decks are solid buys, especially if you can pick them up in the $20 range. Just the new legendary, Arcane Signet, and the shockland add up to significantly more than $20 in value, and you get another 57 cards for free!
