Modern Mayhem: Food N' Faeries (Modern, Magic Online)

To celebrate October, I'll be playing more sp000000ky themes and tribal decks. This week I want to see what Oko can do with Faeries!

Gameplan

A few months back I did Sultai Ninja and Faeries deck that was great but this time around, I wanted to go back on a few Ninjas and add some of the sweet new cards

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 g $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

We're still playing Ingenious Infiltrator as the dream is to bounce back your Brazen Borrower to use again. Its a cute interaction but when paired with so many other wonderful "enter the battlefield" effects, there are definitely some huge upsides to having Ninjitsu. Oko, Thief of Crowns has been running around all over standard and is a proven card. We all knew this but how would this card hold up in Modern? That's pretty much what I'm here to find out as there are so many things we can 'elk-ify'. With the rise in popularity of Burn, I also expect Oko coming down super early and having such high loyalty will make our burn opponents feel a little sad. Another card I'm really excited to play with is Drown in the Loch. The average cost of Modern spells fall around 3 mana or less and that really isn't hard to get to as our opponents will just naturally fill their own graveyard which will turn this into a Counterspell or a cheap removal spell.

Matchups

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I do worry about our Tron and Emra matchups as I haven't played any of them yet and I assume our clock being a bunch of small dinky creatures can be too slow. This video will be my first taste of the new meta so I'm excited to see how our matches play out. I used to fear playing burn with Bitterblossom in the deck but now that we've got Oko. Any hand with Oko and removal just feels insane against burn. Usually my Jund matches have been 50/50 and usually comes down to how much Wrenn and Six has done in the game as it is a very good card against us but we're quite well equipped to deal with. We've got Assassin's Trophy and Brazen Borrower to just bounce it so we can potentially counter it with our numerous counterspells. Our deck is very fair so I'm assuming any of the unfair or Walking Ballista decks will give us a rough time so I've tried to split my sideboard up to deal with as many unfair decks as we can.

Conclusion

After playing the deck, I definitely think we need cheap spells like Opt to dig for lands. I also think Witch's Vengeance might be too cute as the main reason for it was so that I don't hit my own creatures but sometimes we just need a clean sweep like Damnation. Here's a slightly updated list that I'd like to try.

Oko, Thief of Crowns may not be an auto-include for this deck but I'll have to figure that out with more playtesting. Normally our game plan is to do everything on our opponent's turn and just leave up mana always but Oko's abilities seem worth it so far. I used to play discard spells like Inquisition of Kozilek but I wanted to drop them this time but maybe its better to just go discard heavy and only have Drown in the Loch as our counterspell with a few Cryptic Commands. The format is new and I'll definitely be tweaking this Sultai list and my Esper control list!

Thanks for watching and Happy October! Let me know if there are any tribes or spooky themed decks you'd like to see, let me know in the comments!
