Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Wheel of Fortune Mishra's Bauble Lion's Eye Diamond

This week most of the biggest finance news is related to the impending paper release of Ikoria. Topping our list we have some Commander staples that were bought up last weekend, headlined by Wheel of Fortune and Winds of Change. About a month ago, Wheel of Fortune was $100; it's now sitting at $188 after briefly hitting $200, while [[Winds of Change] has doubled up from around $6 to $12. The reason for the increase seems to be Rielle, the Everwise and Xyris, the Writhing Storm, two new legends that want decks overflowing with wheel effects. Wheel of Fortune is especially problematic thanks to the Reserved List making it impossible to reprint. Until Wizards changes their reprint philosophy, the choice Commander players have is adding one of the best red cards in the format to their deck for an absurdly high cost, or playing one of a handful of similar but much worse options like Magus of the Wheel, Wheel of Fate, or Reforge the Soul, neither of which is ideal. While it is possible Wheel of Fortune ticks down a bit in the coming weeks, the days of $100 copies are likely over until something changes with the Reserved List.

In tournament formats, companions are all the rage, with one of the biggest winners being Mishra's Bauble, which has ticked up for the $8-9 range just over a week ago to $14-15 today thanks to its synergy with Lurrus of the Dream Den - the most heavily-played companion in non-Standard formats. Mishra's Bauble significantly raises the floor of Lurrus of the Dream Den. At its worst it will draw you a card the turn it comes into play by allowing you to recast Mishra's Bauble from your graveyard, and if Lurrus sticks on the battlefield for a few turns, you'll quickly outpace your opponent in cards. Thankfully Mishra's Bauble was reprinted fairly recently in Iconic Masters and Mystery Boosters, or we'd likely be looking at a $100 Modern legal uncommon. If you want to play a Lurrus of the Dream Den deck, you'll probably need a playset, otherwise I wouldn't be surprised to see another reprint of Mishra's Bauble in the not too distant future. Selling extras into the Lurrus hype probably makes sense (although I'd wait a few more weeks since Ikoria hasn't even released yet).

Last but not least we have Chrome Mox, which some people have been playing to help power Gyruda, Doom of Depths into play on turn one in Legacy. This has caused the artifact's price to show up from around $55 to $70 or $80 depending on the printing despite the fact that many Legacy players say that Chrome Mox isn't actually good in the Gyruda deck. Meanwhile, Lion's Eye Diamond has crept up from $210 to $250 because it is undoubtedly good with Gyruda, Doom of Depths and Lurrus of the Dream Den in formats like Legacy and Vintage. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Reserved List artifact top its all-time high of $290 in the near future if companions remain legal in older formats.
