Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in the world of finance, the biggest winner was Darkness, with the Timeshifted version shooting up 158% to $27 after showing up in a UB Mill deck that posted a 5-0 finish on Magic Online. On one hand, this isn't all that surprising - old, low supply cards spike all of the time if they start seeing play in tournament decks. The black Fog has just two printings, both in the distant past: Legends and Timeshifted in Time Spiral. On the other hand, the price of the Legends version of Darkness hasn't really moved at all. In fact, you can still find near mint copies for around $15. Considering that the Legends version has always been more expensive than the Timeshifted printing thanks to its lower supply, this suggests that this is a buyout rather than a real increase in demand. If you need Darkness today, snag the Legends version, otherwise give it a few weeks and the Timeshifted printing should drop.
This week also marked the official release of Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, and so far the set isn't looking great from a value perspective. The expected value of a draft booster box is just $78 while a collector booster box has an expected value of $186, with both being well below the cost of a box. This is surprisingly low for a release weekend, low enough that it's unlikely the cards from the set will lose that much value going forward. For context, Strixhaven draft boosters currently have an expected value of $97 and collector boosters $265). If anything, some of the cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms might actually be under-priced. Seeing creature-lands like Hive of the Eye Tyrant, Cave of the Frost Dragon, and Hall of Storm Giants come in at under $1 with Den of the Bugbear and Lair of the Hydra around $2 is surprising, considering the cycle should see a ton of play in Standard and could break into older formats as well. It's actually pretty tempting to pick up some copies now while prices are low. They can't really get much cheaper than they are today, and if paper Magic makes its return at some point in the next year, they could end up being worth a few dollars.
Finally, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander decks are still making an impact on the market with Stolen Strategy, one of the best upgrades for a Prosper, Tome-Bound deck, more than doubling from $5 to $13 this week. In this case, the demand is probably real and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the price stick. As we get ready for another round of Commander decks in a couple of months when we return to Innistrad, if a new legend happens to catch your eye, try to pick up the support pieces quickly. We've seen time and time again they are likely to see a meaningful increase in price as everyone rushes out to buy the cards they need to build around the spicy new commanders.
