Single Scoop: Rogues 2022 (Standard, Magic Arena)

Gameplan

Rogues are going to look way different post rotation so I wanted to see how they'd fair with the loss of Thieves' Guild Enforcer, Into the Story, and Drown in the Loch! Thanks to #MTGAFR, we've got some sweet new rogues to play with.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Krydle of Baldur's Gate is far from a Thieves' Guild Enforcer but has the ability to make our threats unblockable, and if Krydle connects, we get to mill and drain 1 from our opponents. This unblockable part will come into effect later as we are playing cards like Rogue Class which will serve as a card advantage engine. Yuan-Ti Malison seems to be our premier two drop as it getting unblockable and venturing will help our deck a significant amount as venturing through the dungeon of Phandelver will be extremely helpful in smoothing our draws!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Zareth hasn't been a big deal for the meta as Lurrus ended up being the best thing a rogue deck could do but with Lurrus gone and out of standard, Zareth's rogue-jitsu ability will be grabbing numerous permanents from our opponent's graveyard. Not only that, but it doesn't die from Frost Bite which I expect will be one of the best removal spells post rotation.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Tasha's Hideous Laughter is something I'm just playing as a pet card, but I imagine will eventually be dropped as standard is loaded with big mana spells. I think this card can be dropped and replaced with more countermagic and more removal.

Conclusion

Rogues will need a huge boost with Innistrad as we needed to get lucky with this deck. Rogue Class was definitely a sweet card but the power level of rogues has sharply fallen off due to not enough flash and cheap rogues. Most importantly, losing a versatile spell in Drown in the Loch is painful, and I think rogues are a tier 2 deck but still fun when you can get its engine online. We're just going to have to work a lot harder than we did when Eldraine was in the format.
