Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Sylvan Library Apocalypse Chime Scalding Tarn

This week, the biggest finance news came from two big, Commander-focused announcements yesterday, with Wizards giving us the full set list of Commander Collection: Green (releasing December 5) and previewing some cards from Commander Legends (coming the beginning of November). While it is too early to say much about Commander Legends, other than that Wizards has listed boxes on Amazon for the surprisingly cheap price of $125, Commander Collection: Green looks solid. Thanks to Sylvan Library, Worldly Tutor, and some solid midrange rare like Omnath, Locus of Mana, Seedborn Muse, and Bane of Progress, the eight cards in the set are currently worth $163 for their cheapest printings. The question is how much it will sell for. As a local game store exclusive, Commander Collection: Green is more similar to past From the Vault releases than it is to something like the Signature Spellbook series. It wouldn't be surprising to see normal versions to sell for $100 or more and the much rarer (only available at WPN Premium stores) foil versions being quite expensive. Much will depend on the supply. If you have a chance to pick up the collection at a decent price, it seems like a solid buy, being stuffed with some of the most playable green cards in the Commander format.

In other news, Reserved List buyouts are back and as illogical as ever. The Magic card that went up the most in price this week? Apocalypse Chime, which shot up from under $1 to $14.50 after a buyout. The artifact is quite literally unplayable in every imaginable format. Add in a bunch of other random Reserved List cards like Weakstone, Phyrexian Purge, Ebon Praetor doubling in price this week, it might once again be time to start ignoring Reserved List cards. If there's something from the list that is still cheap and you might need for Commander in the future, you might as well pick it up now. Chances are someone will buy it out at some point in the future. If Apocalypse Chime can jump up to $15, it could happen to any Reserved List card.

Finally, with yesterday's preview stream it was confirmed that fetchlands will not be in Commander Legends (it was also confirmed that fetches would not be on "the list" from Zendikar Rising set boosters). While we know there will be another reprinting of some kind this year, we are quickly running out of places for the land cycle to show up. Unless there is an unannounced product coming during the holiday season (which is possible), the only obvious landing spots for fetchlands would be another Secret Lair drop or some odd slot in a Zendikar Rising product like Collector Boosters which wouldn't make them legal in Standard. Regardless, the dreams of fetchlands showing up in an inexpensive, high supply product seems more or less dead, at least for the rest of 2020.
