Zendikar Rising Previews

Zendikar Rising previews have begun in earnest! This week we got a glimpse of the new mechanics for the set: modal cards where you choose which side to play, including a new cycle of dual lands, the party mechanic, and the return of landfall. Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Edgewalker Oboro, Palace in the Clouds Sea Gate Restoration

This week, the biggest finance news is related to Zendikar Rising spoilers with cards that are likely to work with the tribes and mechanics of the set in Commander increasing in price. The biggest winner was the Scourge uncommon Edgewalker which shot up from $1 to $9 thanks to its potentially to be an insane ramp spell in Cleric Commander decks. Along the same lines, lands that can repeatedly trigger landfall are also on the rise. Oboro, Palace in the Clouds tripled up from $20 to $60 and Terrain Generator is creeping up as well, although being an uncommon with multiple printings should keep it from getting too high. While these cards probably won't stick at their spike price, these are not just buyouts, thanks to new Zendikar Rising cards there is a legitimate increase in demand, which means dropping back down to their pre-spike price also isn't likely. If you working on a sweet Zendikar Rising themed Commander deck, picking up key pieces sooner rather than later can help save a bit of money.

It wouldn't be a finance update without random Reserved List cards doubling in price. This week saw Herald of Serra, Second Chance and Volrath's Shapeshifter join the list for no apparent reason other than Wizards promise to never reprint them. At this point I'm starting to get tried of writing about Reserved List buyouts every week. If there something you need on the list that hasn't spiked, get it now because it almost certainly will at some point in the future. The nature of the Reserved List itself makes these buyouts more or less inevitable.

Finally, as far as Zendikar Rising itself, there is a pretty big debate over the playability, power and value of the double-faced model lands. Take a card like Sea Gate Restoration which is pre-selling for around $10. For a mythic land that has potential to be a four-of in decks in multiple formats $10 is super cheap. On the other hand, some people question whether these cards are that much better than having a random cycling land, and if it turns out the double-faced model cards are more fringe archetype staples or fail to break out past Standard, $10 may end up being too much. The mythic double-face model land cycle in specific is worth watching, it's likely the are currently mispriced, the question is in which direction? Are they too cheap or too expensive? Only time will tell for sure.
