Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Star of Extinction Necrotic Ooze Doom Whisperer

The biggest finance news this week is Standard still adjusting to rotation and Guilds of Ravnica, although the biggest winner of the week is a card that doesn't really see Standard play: Star of Extinction jumped 217% to nearly $6. Unfortunately, the reason why Star of Extinction spiked isn't exactly clear. There is one Magic Online list that played a couple of copies in the sideboard, but it might just be that people are excited for the Against the Odds worthy combo with Truefire Captain that can deal 20 damage for just seven mana. Unless this combo proves to be tournament playable (which seems unlikely), expect Star of Extinction to trend down in coming weeks.

In Modern, Necrotic Ooze shot up nearly 199% to $8 on the back of some hype for a potential combo deck involving Doom Whisperer. If you can get a Necrotic Ooze on the battlefield and a Doom Whisperer in the graveyard, you have the ability to use Necrotic Ooze to surveil a bunch of times, hopefully milling over a combination of creatures with activated abilities that will allow you to win the game (likely Morselhoarder and Devoted Druid for infinite mana and then a Walking Ballista for infinite damage). While the deck doesn't have any result yet, Necrotic Ooze is the type of card that will be broken eventually. Once that happens, it should increase even more. The question is whether this happens now or a few years from now.

Finally, checking back in on Guilds of Ravnica as whole: the set stayed steady this week. Last week a complete set of Guilds of Ravnica was $310, today it's $308.30. While these prices will start to come down before long, for now opening a box is a fine deal, with the expected value being essentially the same as when we talked about it a couple of weeks ago.
