Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Torrential Gearhulk Cryptbreaker Unified Will

The biggest financial news of the week comes from Amonkhet Standard's week one results. While these changes should be viewed critically until after next weekend's Pro Tour Amonkhet, the early winners of our new Standard seem to be control and Zombies. For control, Pull from Tomorrow (up 55% to nearly $5) and Torrential Gearhulk (up 40% to $23.50) are the big winners, while nearly every playable Zombie including Cryptbreaker, Diregraf Colossus, Dread Wanderer, and Never // Return doubled in price this week. The question is if these decks will still be a thing in the post-Pro Tour meta. While both seem to to have enough raw power to stick around, it's hard to predict what the pros will play, much less what decks will have success.

As for Modern, the story is not one but two buyouts. First we have Unified Will, which is the latest in a long line of playable uncommons from older sets to see a significant spike. It wouldn't be that surprising to see the new price mostly stick. If you are going to spend hundreds of dollars to build Modern Merfolk, what's an extra $4 a copy to have the optimal sideboard? Meanwhile, Seshiro the Anointed is clearly based on Commander, and likely tied to the release of Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, which has renewed interest in Snakes as a tribe in the casual format. While it's unlikely the Snake legend will return to its pre-spike price, trending down is the norm with this type of casual buyout as sellers race to the bottom to undercut the market and move their copies.

Let's wrap up by talking about the weirdest price of the week, Tattered Mummy jumping to $3, an increase of over 1000%. What's going on with the Amonket common? Nothing. This is basically just some weirdness on TCGplayer where only two copies are listed (both at $2.98). As soon as more are listed, the price will drop back down to where it was before. If you see something like this happen in the future, make sure to check the supply. If it's extremely low (especially when the card in question is an in-print common), it's best to write off the spike as an outlier that will fix itself before long.
