Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
Things are still amazingly quite in Standard as far as finance is concerned, to the point that the three biggest winners of the week—Botanical Sanctum, Traverse the Ulvenwald and Fatal Push—are likely on the upswing thanks to Modern rather than Standard. This said, Amonkhet spoilers start in eight days, and we'll have another Banned and Restricted announcement within a month, so this is likely the calm before the storm.
Meanwhile in Modern, the focus is still on Modern Masters 2017. Maybe the most interesting news of the week is that the chase cards from the set (Liliana of the Veil, Snapcaster Mage and the best of the fetches) actually increased between 10% and 16%, while other important cards like Tarmogoyf and the lesser fetches stabilized. It's too early to say for sure whether these cards have already reached their floor; rumor has it that stores can get 20 more boxes of MM3 from Wizards and this new supply could have an impact, but my guess is if the chase cards do decline more, it won't be by much.
As for the cards not in Modern Masters 2017, the biggest winners in Modern are Seismic Assault and Swans of Bryn Argoll. It's rare that budget decks have an impact in the paper world, but the 42 Land Swan Hunt deck received a ton of coverage this week, and if seems like people are interested in hitting their swans and drawing some cards. Unlike Magic Online, paper prices tend to be sticky, so don't expect the cards to immediately crash, although they will likely trend down over coming months. If you have extra copies laying around, you might as well sell into the hype.
