Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
It's been another fairly quiet week in the world of Magic finance, although this will likely change in the next few days as Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty spoilers pick back up starting on Thursday. The bigger gainer this week was Elvish Reclaimer (planeswalker stamp) which jumped 37% to $7.25, mostly because of a new take on Modern Jund that's playing four copies of the one-drop to find Urza's Saga. Add in a bit of Legacy and Commander demand and Elvish Reclaimer (planeswalker stamp) is exactly the type of card that slowly creeps up in price once it is out of Standard.
One of the weirder bits of price movement this week came was Kusari-Gama, which shot up 44% to around $5. While there has been a lot of interest in cards from original Kamigawa recently as we move towards the release of Neon Dynasty, other than the fact that Kusari-Gama was printed in Champions of Kamigawa, I can't really find a reason for the buyout. While Kusari-Gama is from Kamigawa, it's really just a generic equipment. It doesn't do anything specific with Ninjas or Samurai or any of the other themes we've seen from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty (unlike something like Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho). When you consider that the rare doesn't really see play in any format, including Commander, this looks like a misguided finance play more than anything. Expect the price to drop in the future.
Finally, the biggest finance news of the week might be what's coming next Tuesday: a banned list update! There have been discussions of bannings from Standard all the way back to Legacy, with possibilities including Alrund's Epiphany (borderless) in Standard, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Urza's Saga, or Lurrus of the Dream-Den in Modern, o rsomething from Delver in Legacy. Should you be panic selling your cards in fear of them getting banned? Probably not. But considering that many of the possibilities are quite expensive, it's worth keeping the B&R update in mind at the very least. If something like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer or Urza's Saga was banned in Modern, it would have a major impact on card prices. While I wouldn't hurry to sell my staples in the next two days, I would hold off on buying until after we see exactly what gets banned on Tuesday.
