Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Tezzeret the Schemer Chalice of the Void Snapcaster Mage

After the Pro Tour Aether Revolt price spikes of last week, this week in finance has been pretty quiet. The biggest winners of the week in Standard, Spire of Industry and Scrapheap Scrounger, only increased by 10–15%. As expected, some of the cards that were hyped heading into the Pro Tour but failed to perform started to come back down to earth, highlighted by Tezzeret the Schemer (down 13% to just over $10) and Inspiring Statuary (down 26% to $2.50).

In Modern, the biggest gainer of the week was Chalice of the Void, which increased about 50% (depending on the printing) to between $65 and $69. The reason for the spike is two-fold. First, Chalice of the Void is a great answer to the Puresteel Paladin / Sram, Senior Edificer deck which is still getting a lot of hype. Second, Eldrazi Tron is climbing up the format rankings (currently the 7th most played deck in the format), which gives the artifact a four-of main deck home in Modern. The big question mark here is Modern Masters 2017. If Chalice of the Void gets another reprinting, it will lose a ton of value, which means the safest play is to sell into the spike. But, if it dodges a reprinting, it wouldn't be surprising for the price to stick.

Finally, two quick reminders. First, we are closing in on just a couple weeks to go until Modern Masters 2017 spoilers start, so if you have extra copies of reprintable cards (like Snapcaster Mage and Liliana of the Veil) that you are thinking of selling, the time is now. Once the cards are spoiled, it will be too late to get full value. Second, while Standard looks fairly calm at the moment, remember that we have the first of the new post Pro Tour Banned and Restricted announcements in a month. While no changes is probably the most likely outcome, if we continue to see top eights overloaded with GB Delirium/Constrictor and Mardu Vehicles, it's not impossible that something else gets the ban hammer. This announcement is especially important because it will set the baseline for what we should expect moving forward with accelerated Banned and Restricted announcement schedule.
