Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
If you've ever doubted the power of the casual market, this week's biggest finance news provides an stunning example of just how Commander can move the price of cards. We talked about Doubling Season last week, but it's up again, another 24% to $65. But this is nothing compared to Contagion Engine which jumped 205% to $15. Both of these increases are because of Commander 2016 (primarily Atraxa, Praetors' Voice), and it's likely some of the other Modern moves like Arcum Dagsson, Krark-Clan Ironworks, and Time Sieve (all up between 28-60%) are based on Commander demand as well. At this point, there's not much to be done this year, but in future years, the lesson is to get your Commander upgrade cards quick—while the price of the cards from the Commander releases will be dropping, the price of the upgrade cards will spiking.
In Standard, things are pretty quite, with nearly all of the movement being from staples. While a few are up, headlined by Jace, Unraveler of Secrets which is pushing $10 (partly because of Commander), most are down between 3-6%. Typically the peak for Standard prices, especially for cards rotating in the fall (so Battle for Zendikar block and Shadows over Innistrad block) is January through March, but it's possible it comes early this year if people move to other formats earlier than usual because they're sick of GB Delirium and UW Flash.
Finally, on Magic Online, in just the last day we've seen a big increase from Aetherworks Marvel. By the numbers, Aetherworks Marvel decks have recently tied GB Delirium as the second most play in the format, and this week's Top 8 at the SCG Invitational featured five Aetherworks decks. Unless there's a surprise banning (perhaps Emrakul, the Promised End) to increase attendance at Standard events, I expect that at some point in the next few months, Aetherworks Marvel will end up being worth twice as much as its current $5 price tag. If you're thinking of playing the deck, get your copies soon.
