Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week the world of Magic finance is mostly focused on the new Modern Horizons 2 Modern format and the impending rotation of Standard. The biggest winner this week was Flamekin Harbinger which more than doubled in price to $11. The one-drop has suddenly become a Modern staple thanks to a new Four-Color Elemental deck built around the evoke Elementals from Modern Horizons 2 (which we played for Much Abrew a week ago). Somehow Flamekin Harbinger has managed to dodge reprinting since it first showed up in Lorwyn, with just the low supply Planechase and Mystery Booster foil slot offering additional copies. Assuming the Elemental deck is real, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the new price stick until it's reprinted, which will happen eventually and likely drop the price a lot since it's an uncommon. In the meantime, if you want to play Four-Color Elementals, you'll probably have to bite the bullet and pay the new, higher price. The one-drop tutor is essential to the deck.
As far as Standard, we once again saw the prices of Adventures in the Forgotten Realms cards tick up this week, with Ranger Class leading the way with a 90% jump to $6. The enchantment has proven itself as one of the best cards in Mono-Green Aggro, which is one of the best decks in the Standard 2022 format. It's also seeing a decent amount of play in Pioneer and a little bit in Modern as well. Toss in some Commander play and it seems possible the enchantment will continue to rise. Keep an eye on the rest of the rare Class enchantments as well. They are widely considered to be the most powerful cards in Forgotten Realms. Fighter Class also nearly doubled in price this week and Bard Class has been a popular build around in Historic and Pioneer. While Ranger Class is the clear all-star of the megacycle thanks to its cross-format playability, it wouldn't be surprising to see some of the others climb in the future as well. People are just starting to realize how powerful these cards can be.
Finally, we got a sneak peak at Innistrad: Midnight Hunt this week, with one of the biggest highlights being Champion of the Perished. The zombified Champion of the Parish has potential to be a really big deal, especially in Modern, where it could turn Zombies into a legitimate tier deck thanks to its synergy with Gravecrawler and Carrion Feeder. Gravecrawler is especially interesting from a financial perspective. It has been as high as $20 in the past, but is currently $8-$9 thanks to a Mystery Booster reprinting. If Zombies does end up being legitimate in Modern, Gravecrawler is guaranteed to be a four-of in the deck. It wouldn't be a surprise to see it shoot back up towards $20. Other Zombies to watch include Cryptbreaker (which only has one printing in Eldritch Moon) and the one-printing Shadows over Innistrad mythic Relentless Dead.
