Single Scoop: Historical Merfolk (Historic, Magic Arena)
Gameplan
The merfolk gameplan is to still flood the board with a bunch of fish friends but thanks to #MTGAFR, we have a few tools to try out. Specifically, Lair of the Hydra and Ranger Class.
These two new cards have boosted the power level of most green decks in the format so why not see if Merfolk can benefit from them too? First off, having a creature land is always powerful as it's able to dodge sorcery speed answers like Wrath of God. The land is a mana sink and is a legit closer once our opponents are exhausted of resources! Ranger Class continues to impress in all formats and I imagine that this is the card Merfolk need to get card advantage.
Conclusion
The new cards did boost our power level, but Merfolk will always be a meme deck in Historic until we get cards like Lord of Atlantis and resource denial like Spreading Seas. The deck is fun for Merfolk Fanatics so if you're a fan, definitely try it out!
