Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Always Watching Restore Balance Scalding Tarn

Once again, all of the biggest financial news this week is related to Amonkhet previews, both in Standard and in Modern. In Standard, last week we talked about how cycling lead to some prices increases from cards like The Gitrog Monster and Splendid Reclamation. This week, both cards are up again, along with Always Watching with seems like an all-star for aggressive exert decks. Even post-spike none of these cards are really expensive (in the $2.00 - $2.50 range), so it's probably fine to hold them in case they hit it big at the Pro Tour—but be aware that since these cards rotate in the fall, this will be their peak.

Meanwhile in Modern, people are excited about casting free spells for free with As Foretold. As a result, Lotus Bloom and Restore Balance more than doubled in price this week to around $20 and $10 respectably, while the already expensive Ancestral Visions also ticked up. These increases are purely speculative. While it's possible that As Foretold is good enough to spawn new archetypes, Modern is a fast format and it's just as possible that casting an Ancestral Visions on turn three simply isn't good enough. Personally I'd lean towards selling into the hype if you can get anywhere near retail.

Finally, this week also brought the first meaningful decline in the prices of the chase cards from Modern Masters 2017. While the fetchlands and other chase rares and mythics still aren't cheap, they are significantly discounted compared to pre-reprint prices, so enjoy the Modern sale!
