Weekly Update (Oct 4): BFZ Standard Decklists, Jace, Bring to Light
|
Battle for Zendikar Standard |
|
This past weekend marked the official release of Battle for Zendikar and we had our first major tournament at SCG Indianapolis. Atarka Red took down the tournament, but the storylines were numerous. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar had big showings (shooting Jace up to $85 at peak), four/five-color decks were common (including 5c Bring to Light which showed us 8 Rhinos are better than 4), and the top 8 featured an average deck price of $640. Be sure to check out our coverage, recap and analysis of the weekend:

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
The great shakeup that is Standard rotation and all the crazy price movement that comes along with it has begun. Let's delve right into the biggest financial news of the week:
Reports from case crackers are that you'll get somewhere between 1.6 and 2 Zendikar Expeditions per case (6 boxes) — numbers similar to those reported from prerelease events. As a result, Expeditions across the board have plunged nearly 25 percent in the past week. Currently slowlands are $50-$60, shocks are $80-$100, non-blue fetches are $100-$150, and blue fetches are $230-$280. Based on rapidly dropping buylist prices, it is likely that their value will continue to plummet over the short term as more Battle for Zendikar is opened.
The two biggest Standard winners this week are Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, currently $65 (up from $50 a few days ago) and Atarka's Command, up 134 percent to $14.50. Jace, Vryn's Prodigy will likely be one of the five most played creatures in Standard once the data starts trickling out and he is also a key part of the Five-Color Bring to Light decks which dominated day one of #SCGINDY. Atarka's Command, on the other hand, is gaining traction in the GR Landfall deck which was seen on camera killing on turn four through a removal spell. While it's too soon to say if these decks will be part of the new tier one in Standard, it is entirely possible. If that is the case, these cards could maintain their current prices at least for a month or two.
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar dropped 5 percent this week to $35, but it's not due to a lack of play. He's been on camera all weekend and often looking quite good. The bigger issue with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is that at nearly $40, he was just too expensive as a Battle for Zendikar mythic — even a very good Battle for Zendikar mythic. I expect to see him near the top of the losers several times over the next couple months, following the Narset Transcendent trajectory (losing a few percent every week) until he's $15 or under by the end of winter.
Finally, coming in on the list of most viewed cards on MTGGoldfish this week is Thoughtseize. I can only imagine this is because everyone is trying to figure out what the future holds now that it has rotated from Standard. Typically a rotating eternal staple like Thoughtseize will lose a few dollars in the month or two following rotation, bottom out in December or January, and then start increasing in price. There isn't any reason to dump your copies now (unless you really need the money) since you're unlikely to be able to buy in for less in the future — at least until Thoughtseize gets yet another reprinting.
