New Sealed Registration Procedure |
|
Helen Bergeot announced a new procedure for Sealed Pool registrations. The tldr of the update is you get to keep the pool you open, effective this weekend. This change was made to address the awkwardness of people opening Zendikar Expeditions and "being forced" to drop out of a Sealed tournament to maximize EV.

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
With one week of Battle for Zendikar Standard in the books and a Pro Tour right around the corner, the big financial news of the week is the early winners and losers of the new format. Dragonlord Ojutai led the winners, increasing 117 percent to $35 — back to its release period, Pro Tour Dragons of Tarkir high — on the back of the resurgence of Esper Dragons and Jeskai. Non-blue Khans of Tarkir fetches shot up across the board in response to GR Landfall hype, bringing along with them Atarka's Command, which increased 25 percent to nearly $15. Finally, Den Protector increased 33 percent to nearly $15, which isn't really a surprise when you consider it's among of the most heavily played creatures in the new Standard. It's fourth overall right between Siege Rhino and Jace, Vryn's Prodigy.
On the other hand, all the big cards from the Battle for Zendikar Event Deck (with the exception of Windswept Heath) dropped significantly this week. Hangarback Walker dropped 7 percent to $14.67; being the single most played card in Standard isn't enough to save the artifact's price from the massive increase of supply. Furthermore, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, Whisperwood Elemental and Evolutionary Leap decreased between 11 and 13 percent, mostly because of the Event Deck, but also because their level of play has dropped in the new Standard.
In other news, Spawnsire of Ulamog was the casual buyout of the week, jumping from under $4 to nearly $7. Just like we saw with Allies a few weeks ago, this Eldrazi provides another reminder that when a new set is released, it's important to watch out for casual tribes that suddenly get more support. The prices of these cards often double as demand increases significantly. Storm World is now $85 at TCG-mid, up from $5 a couple weeks ago, even though no one outside the Old School community cares about (or has even heard of) the card. I'm still not sure what to make of the format or the price increases it's been causing, but the allure of a nostalgic format is strong for 30-somethings flush with disposable income who fondly recall playing the old cards in their teen years. So maybe it has some staying power.
One last quick note: If you are planning on making some Pro Tour specs, don't wait until Friday. Save yourself the hassle and get them early in the week so that you can enjoy our quarterly Magic holiday. Post-rotation Pro Tours are the best — you're not going to want to spend your weekend frantically refreshing pages trying to buy the new Pro Tour tech.

Week Two of Battle for Zendikar Standard brought us a 4/4 split of Jeskai and Megamorph decks in the Top 8 of SCG Atlanta. A surprising lack of Rhinos in the Top 8 (never thought I'd say that). Once again, very few Battle for Zendikar non-land cards made an appearance in the Top 8, but fret not — the real metagame will be revealed this upcoming weekend at Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar.
- Jacob Lively took down SCG Standard Open Atlanta (standard) with GW Megamorph.
- Caleb Scherer took down SCG Legacy Premier IQ Atlanta (legacy) with ANT.
- Zan Syed took down SCG Modern Premier IQ Atlanta (modern) with G/R Aggro.
