Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive

Azor's Gateway The Immortal Sun Black Lotus

This week, the biggest finance news is the spoiling of a mysterious set of cards know as UMA. Over the past couple of days, many of the most expensive cards in Modern (and a few pre-Modern cards) have shown up in borderless foil form on social media, with a full announcement to come Monday morning at 11 am EST. Speculation is these cards could be from an upcoming Masters set, or they could be some sort of new buy-a-box promotion for the holiday season. The financial impact of these cards remains to be seen. If UMA is a Masters set, expect a big drop in prices in Modern staples, but if UMA is a buy-a-box promotion, don't expect much in terms of price movement.

In Standard, we're witnessing the rise of the artifacts. People are realizing that with Abrade out of the format, it's suddenly safe to play do-nothing artifacts and expect them to sit on the battlefield. As a result, Azor's Gateway (showing up in some Jeskai Control lists) increased 140% to $14 this week while The Immortal Sun (great for locking down planeswalkers from decks like Golgari and Teferi Control) jumped 53% to a massive $23. If you're not playing with these cards and have them in your collection, don't be afraid to sell or trade them away. The winter is usually the peak for Standard cards that rotate the following fall.

Finally, yesterday at Eternal Weekend some people bought an entire booth out of their graded cards at the cost of around $1.5 million. If you're someone who happens to have old cards (especially from the first two or three years of the game) sitting around in good condition, grading might be a solid plan. At this point, cards from Alpha and Beta up through Antiquities and Legends are collectors items more than for gameplay. Grading cards are the best way collectors can guarantee the condition of the cards they are buying. For more recent cards, the cost of grading isn't usually worthwhile, but for very old cards it can be a boon.
